Caroline Rhea was born on 13 April 1964 in Westmount, Quebec, Canada to Margery (an antique dealer) and David Rhea (an obstetrician and gynecologist). She has two siblings, Cynthia and Celia. For her education, she chose to attend The Study – an all-girls private school in Westmount, Quebec. Rhea then proceeded to study at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. She also studied acting and stand-up comedy at the New School for Social Research, New York.

In 1986, Caroline Rhea relocated to New York to pursue a career in comedy and acting. She started performing at comedy venues like Catch a Rising Star and The Comic Strip where she performed alongside future superstar comedians like , Dave Attell, , . and Marc Maron.

Her first stand-up comedy performances to be filmed include MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour, Caroline’s Comedy Hour and Comic Strip Live. Rhea featured in a one-hour special for Home Box Office (HBO) called One Night Stand which resulted in a huge success for her.
