Holcomb grew up in a black community called Robert Taylor Homes in Chicago. He graduated from Illinois States University in the late nineties. During his college days, Corey was playing basketball before he was introduced into stand-up comedy by his friends, and Godfrey Danchimah who were also comedians themselves.
Holcomb began his comedy career in the late ’90s. At first, he adopted the name ‘Ghetto Dr. Phil McGraw’ and performed at various comedy centers and television series including NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam. Alongside he appeared in Comic View and later in the 1995 sketch comedy series titled Wild N’Out. Alongside DeRay, he starred on The Show. Later on, he hosted his own sketch comedy shows including Comedy Central Presents: Corey Holcomb, Corey Holcomb: Your Way Ain’t Working, and Corey Holcomb: The Problem Is You.
In 2010, he featured on ’s All-Star Comedy Jam after which he appeared on other television shows such as Everybody Hates Chris, ’s show called House of Payne, Half & Half, Family Guy, Black Jesus, Dance Flick and Like Mike. Alongside , he featured regularly on The Foxxhole for four years (2007 to 2011). He portrayed the role of Uncle Larry in the 2012 film titled Who’s Watching the Kids and in 2014; he starred in Think Like a Man Too. The following year, he appeared in The Wedding Ringer.
