Who is Stephen Fry? 

Stephen John Fry was born on August 24, 1957, in Hampstead, London. His parents are Alan John Fry and Marianne Eve Newman. His father, Alan, was a physicist and an inventor. Fry had a troubled childhood and left home at age seven. He completed his high school education in a plethora of boarding schools. He had a rather disturbing reputation as a troublemaker. He was a terror to his schoolmates, especially, his classmates. He was a mischievous young boy, a bag of tricks, always seeking ways to get his mates into trouble. He would tamper with the organ in his high school chapel and the organist will flop while trying to conjure a sound. His misdemeanor got him expelled from high school.

If you had met Fry at that point in his life, you will not imagine he’d turn out to be this successful in life. He was suicidal, rebellious, gay, and fraudulent. He was jailed for three months when he was eighteen years old for credit-card fraud. It was in college that he changed and his prospects began to look up. He earned a scholarship to study at Queens’ College, Cambridge in 1977. It was in college that he joined a drama club and began to participate in plays, stage dramas and also write his own plays which were performed. This turn, marked a reversal of fortunes, from the young man who was a thorn in the flesh of many to the young man vigorously pursuing a passion that will make everyone come to know him in the nearest future.

As college progressed, he continued writing and performing his creative pieces which were showcased at the Fringe festival in Edinburgh. In his third year, Fry met , a fellow student at the time and they began to write together. First, he joined the Cambridge Footlights comedy revue, a theater which is said to have been the starting point of many British comics. Soon they began to write and also perform their sketches which became very popular such that they embarked on a tour of Australia with their works before graduating in 1982.

Acting Career

Upon graduating from college, Fry went into television which turned him into a millionaire. He starred in the musical Me and My Girl, an adaption from a book by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose which is set in the late 1930s. The story is that of a crude young man who suddenly realizes that he is the 14th heir to the Earl of Hareford. He produced a television program with Laurie titled, A Bit of Fry and Laurie. The show, which aired for eight seasons (between 1987 and 1995).

He has starred in several films including The Fish Called Wanda (1988), The Steal (1995), Wilde (1997), Whatever Happened to Harold Smith (1999), Best (2000), Gosford Park (2001), V for Vendetta (2006), The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013), Love and Friendship (2016), etcIn 2003, Fry became the host of the comic game show “QI” (Quite Interesting) which featured guest comedians, vying for game points. He made his debut in film directing in the same year with the film Bright Young Things. Still in 2013, he debuted on Broadway with the Shakespeare’s play Twelfth Night.

Stephen Fry has successfully combined his acting career with writing. The British comedian, asides from acting, is also an author and a writer who has written bestsellers. His career as a writer is also well spoken of around the world. From funny fictions to non-fiction, Fry has been in the heat of the action when it comes to writing. Three of his early works – The Liar, The Hippopotamus and Making History: A Novel – have become bestsellers and they were written in 1991, 1994 and 1996 respectively.

He also has written his autobiography in series and each volume reveal a different time in his life. The first part was written in 1997 and was titled Moab Is My Washpot. This part captures his life as a troubled teenager in high school until he was awarded the scholarship which gave him the opportunity to go to Cambridge. The second in the series – The Fry Chronicles (2010), chronicles his life in college, how he stumbled into the world of acting through stage plays and dramas, and how it changed his life. More Fool Me which was written in 2014 talks about how he started off in the industry and how he became successful.

Stephen Fry is an openly gay man and is even married to his gay partner and husband, comedian Elliot Spencer. They got married on January 17, 2015, in Dereham, Norfolk. Fry claims he has been gay from birth and admitted he struggled to keep his sexuality a secret while growing up as a young man. He intended to keep his marriage to Elliot Spencer away from the prying eyes of the press, but the romantic event was reported by The Sun on January 6, 2015, much to the disappointment of Stephen Fry. However, the maneuvered the press to ensure that they were left alone to their wish of a private affair.

Stephen Fry was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1995. His condition became public knowledge when he pulled off a major stunt, leaving a play halfway through and disappearing to Belgium. He has since embarked on a campaign and sensitization to help those battling with the disorder and also help eradicate the stigmatization of those living with it.

He underwent a surgery in January 2018 to remove his prostate and 11 lymph nodes which he describes as “aggressive little bugger” after he was diagnosed with cancer.

His husband, Elliot Spencer is thirty years younger than he is, a fact which has generated negative opinions about their relationship, including suggestions that the union was not love-based.
