Funny, unique and refreshingly modern, the Netflix coming-of-age television dramedy, Atypical, has left a steady stream of dedicated fans wondering if a sequel to its last season will happen. Written and created by Robia Rashid, the TV show explores a real-life and sometimes uncomfortable subject in a manner that audiences, especially teens, can relate to. However, they are left to wonder what it really means to be normal. Atypical was first released in August 2017 and has since received a vast recognition, bagging a nomination for the Satellites Awards in 2018, in the category of Best Musical or Comedy Series. Is There A Season 3 of Atypical?

Atypical is a modern-day, teen comedy-drama television series that centers on the life of 18-year-old Sam Gardner, played by Keir Gilchrist, who is autistic and searching for love and independence. Although a funny and emotional depiction of a journey towards self-discovery, Atypical covers a theme that’s very true to life.

When it was first released in August 11, 2017, the first season of the show received a considerable volume of good reviews, with an average rating of 5.32 out of 10. The acting and performance, especially that of Gilchrist who was a central character, was commended. However, a number of flaws were observed with many bashing the lead character for his inaccurate and cliche-depiction of individuals with autism. Also, the fact that the season lacked the presence of actual people with autism in its cast was brought to fore and put to question.

Season Two was generally seen as an improved version of the first. Sam now wants to make decisions concerning his future and his desire to attend art school is greeted as a fresh take from the stereotype. In addition to that, there was an addition of people with autism to the cast with many playing supporting roles. David Finch, an individual with the complex neurobehavioral condition equally joined the team of writers. Season 2 also sees seven out of its ten episodes directed by women.

A lot did unfold and while a few critics lashed it for losing some of its focus, the generality of viewers lauded it for its unique and refreshing perspective to the subject. Its humor wasn’t left unnoticed either.

Atypical Season 2 was released on the 7th of September, 2017 and had 10 episodes, a two-episode addition compared to Season one which had eight. Judging by the performances of the first and second seasons, there is no reason to shun making Atypical Season 3. But what’s the fact of the matter? Is there a season 3 of Atypical? Let’s find out.

Is The Comedy-Drama Renewed or Canceled?

For fans of the coming-of-age television series, there is a cause to cheer as the show has been renewed for a third season. Atypical Season 3 will have 10 episodes just like the second.

This announcement was made by Netflix on the 24th of October, 2018. Although no official release date has been confirmed yet, it is believed that the third season will air by late 2019, possibly October.

Things are expected to pick up from where they left off in season 2 but in a more heightened fashion. Considering that Sam has applied to a university and has been accepted, a new adventure awaits him there. What becomes of Casey’s newfound romance with Izzie will be left to be seen. Meanwhile, Elsa and Doug will have to come to terms with their past and present lives and perhaps accept a few realities.

Whether this will be the final season of the series may be too early to tell, but given previous outings of Netflix’s comedies, one can assume that this truly may be the last season. If this ends up being the case, then expect season 3 to tie up loose ends and take the story to a definitive conclusion.

Atypical Season 3 Cast, Who Will Return?

In May 2019, it was announced that will be joining the cast for the new season. Eric will play the recurring role of a professor named Shinerock who teaches art. Meanwhile, Sara Gilbert will maintain her role as Professor Judd who teaches ethics.

Other cast members including Keir Gilchrist, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Amy Okuda, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Michael Rapaport, Graham Phillips, and Nik Dodani are all expected to return for Season 3 of Atypical.
