Peter Kay is a multi-talented British actor cum comedian who garnered fame through his appearance on the comic show That Peter Kay Thing. The comedian came into the limelight in 1997 after he won the Channel 4’s So You Think You’re Funny contest. For his brilliant performance, Peter earned a Perrier Award nomination at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Peter Kay’s Biography

The comic star was born as Peter John Kay on the 2nd day of July 1973 in Farnworth, Lancashire, England to Margaret Deirdre O’Neill and her husband Michael John Kay. His father was an engineer who reportedly passed on prior to the inception of Peter’s career. Both his parents are Roman Catholics and Peter was also brought up in the same faith. As a child, he went to Mount Joseph RC School where he obtained a GCSE certificate in art.

Upon graduation, the comedian enrolled at the University of Liverpool but eventually dropped out in order to attend Salford University. While at Salford University, Peter developed a keen interest in stand-up comedy and also participated in various comedy shows before his graduation. He graduated with a Higher National Diploma in Media Performance.

Professional Career

At the early stages of his stand-up comedy career, Peter participated in the North West Comedian of the Year Competition which was held in Manchester. During the competition, he triumphed over Johnny Vegas to win the competition. After that, he started working part-time at a local cinema situated in Bolton while performing at different comedy shows in the neighborhood. After the cinema was shut down, Peter decided to go into comedy full-time.

In 1997, the comedian took part in Channel 4’s comedy competition, So You Think You’re Funny. His exceptional comic lines and hilarious jokes helped him to win the competition. Afterward, he started making appearances on TV shows such as the Comedy Lab, The Sunday Show, Max and Paddy’s Road to Nowhere. He equally started his own show That Peter Kay Thing which aired on BBC One in 1999. For his performances, Peter won the Rose d’Or award at the international TV festival held in Montreux in 2005.

In search of a larger audience, Peter took his comic acts to the stage as he organized several tours and live stage performances around the UK. He also released videotapes for his performances which eventually ranked among the best-selling comedy videos.
