Why won’t there be a second season of the entertaining mystery drama series despite a positive response from critics? Find out the answers to these and more as you read further.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists’ Plot

Beacon Heights, a town that seemed perfect, is turned upside down by the murder of Nolan Hotchkiss; from that moment, lies and secrets get unveiled with everyone needing alibis. Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal, frenemies turned partners-in-crime, then get involved in the complicated lives of Caitlin Park-Lewis, Dylan Walker and Ava Jalali, three University students with dark pasts and connections to Nolan Hotchkiss.

Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is a follow-up TV series of the teen drama mystery series Pretty Little Liars. While the original show was still being aired, I. Marlene King, came up with a plan to adapt another show from Sara Shepard’s novel series The Perfectionists. She made the announcement of adapting the new series sometime in November 2014. She also confirmed that the new series would be a Pretty Little Liars’ sequel.

Production of the series began in 2018 just after the conclusion of Pretty Little Liars. Two stars, and Janel Parrish, from the original series were brought in to be part of the show as its main cast; they reprised their roles as Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal respectively.

Filming of Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists began on October 17, 2018, with other key actors like Kelly Rutherford, , Graeme Thomas King, Eli Brown and Sydney Park joining the list of the show’s cast members. The whole process was eventually wrapped up on January 23, 2019, and on March 20th, the TV series premiered on Freeform.

Why Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists Was Cancelled

Expectations placed on the show were high as a result of the success of its mother show. Fans of Pretty Little Liars quickly switched their attention to Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists but the shocking news about its cancellation after the first season left many wondering if the show was below the standard of its producer and below expectations of the network.

Judging by the critic’s response and ratings, the series got a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes but this was based on just 11 reviews. On IMDb, it earned almost equal ratings as its original show did; it was rated 7.2/10 from 2,684 reviews but the original earned its 7.4/10 ratings from 144,615 reviews.

One of the problems which led to Freeform canceling the show was that it did not have the number of viewer statistics as the original series did. Adding to its low viewing stats was its social media following, which was low as well.

Pretty Little Liars holds the record for the highest-rated show aired on Freeform while its spin-off series has recorded one of the lowest-rated scripted series on the cable network – this made Freeform cancel the show. The show’s cancellation was announced on September 27, 2019.
