Rand was born as the middle child of the five children his parents had. His siblings include Ronald Ronnie Paul Jr., Lori Paul Pyeatt, Robert Paul, and Joy Paul-LeBlanc. When Paul was still a toddler, his family relocated from Pittsburgh to San Antonio, Texas, where they eventually settled in Lake Jackson.

After high school, the Pittsburgh native enroled to study at Baylor University and was there from 1981-1984. His time in the university saw him join the varsity’s swimming team in addition to becoming a member of The NoZe Brotherhood; a collegiate secret organization that initially began as a joke back then. Rand Paul would, however, drop out of Baylor without completing his studies. He later got admitted at his father’s alma mater, the Duke University School of Medicine where he obtained a medical degree in 1988 and completed his residency in ophthalmology in 1993.

Rand Paul began his medical career with a job at John Downing of Downing McPeak Vision Center which had him move to Bowling Green, Kentucky. He worked there for five years before moving over to Graves Gilbert Clinic where he stayed for the next ten years before eventually setting up his own private practice. Paul specialized in cataract, LASIK procedures, corneal transplants, and glaucoma surgeries.

His philanthropic side has seen him perform free surgeries for children in developing countries through the Children of the Americas program. In addition to this, Paul founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic which caters for people who can’t afford to go for eye exams or have eye surgeries.

His Political Career

During his time at Baylor University, Rand Paul showed signs that he would take the path of politics later in life. He first became the leader of the Young Conservatives of Texas, and in response to then President Bush’s increase of taxes, he founded the North Carolina Taxpayers Union in 1991 which was followed by the Kentucky Taxpayers United (KTU), an anti-tax organization he put together in 1994.

Coming down to 2008, he popularised himself among American electorates when he ran for the U.S. Senate as a Republican on November 2, 2010, defeating Attorney General Jack Conway. He was sworn in on the 5th of January 2011 and has been serving as a U.S senator since then. Rand Paul has made productive contributions at various times as a member of the Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, Homeland Security and Government Affairs, including Small Business, and Foreign Relations committees.

On April 7, 2015, he announced his intentions to run for the office of the United States President, but following his finishing as 5th out of 12 Republicans vying for the post at the Iowa caucus on February 3, 2016, he announced the suspension of his campaign. From then to the present time, Rand Paul has been serving well as a U.S Senator.

His Family – Father, Wife, and Son

His father Ron Paul was a United States politician who represented Texas in the House of Representatives and also ran for the seat of U.S Presidency three times without success. He was born on August 20, 1935, in Pittsburgh suburb of Green Tree, Pennsylvania.

Their first son William was born in the year 1992 and five years later (1997), Duncan Paul was born. The youngest of the 3, Robert Paul was born in the year 2000.

Kelley Ashby Paul was born on the 3rd of September 1963 in Russellville, Kentucky into a military family headed by Hilton Ray Ashby and his wife Lillian (Wessell) Ashby. Growing up, her family moved about a lot and she even lived in Turkey at a time.

Kelley graduated from Russellville High School before moving over to Rhodes College where she studied communications and English. She met her husband in 1988 in Atlanta while he was studying for his medical degree at the Duke University School of Medicine.
