Comedians have over time proven to be interested in the political sphere of their immediate society and the American actress, comedian and writer Roseanne Barr is one of such comedians. Barr is a woman who is no stranger to scandal or controversies and has lent her voice to the political and social concerns of her country.

Who is Roseanne Barr?

This comedian was born Roseanne Cherrie Barr on the 3rd of November 1952 in Utah. Her mother, Helen was a bookkeeper and cashier while her father kept a job as a salesman. She is the first child in a brood of four children and hails from a Jewish family who immigrated to America from Russia. One of her sisters is a lesbian and another brother is gay. Growing up, her family practiced the Jewish tradition of worship while simultaneously attending the Church of Latter-day Saints.

During her youth, she suffered some ailments; most notably Bell’s palsy at the age of three. She was also a victim of an accident at the age of sixteen that left her with a brain injury which required she be hospitalized in a mental facility for the period of eight months. Barr had a kid while she was institutionalized and she put the child up for adoption, however, she and the child have been reunited.

At the age of 18, in 1970, Roseanne Barr moved to Colorado from Utah and started to perform stand-up comedy in comedy clubs in Denver and Colorado, honing her art as a comic. She performed in various shows but most notably on The Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman.

In 1987, she had a special; The Roseanne Barr Show on HBO a year after performing on another comic’s special. For the special, she earned the award for the in a television special from the American Comedy Award body.

The show ran from 1988 to 1997, a total of nine years. For the roles she played on the show which was not limited to acting, she won an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a few other awards. The Roseanne show made her not only rich but immensely successful and there was an attempt to return the show in 2018 but it was canceled after she received backlash for some racist tweets.

Barr had other roles in movies such as She-Devil, Look Who’s Talking Too and Joe Dirt; she also served as a host on Saturday Night Live and for the MTV Music Awards. After the hiatus in her standup comedy, she returned to it in 2005 by going on a world tour. As a comic and actress, she has achieved immense success.

Roseanne Barr has been married three times; her first husband was a motel clerk named Bill Pentland, she met him when she moved to Colorado and they got married in 1974. They have three children together – Jessica, Jennifer, and Jake Pentland.

After her divorce from Pentland in 1990, she married a colleague; Tom Arnold four days after the divorce. During the marriage, she changed her last name to his. The couple divorced four years later and they have no children together.

Her third marriage was to a former bodyguard; Ben Thomas. The marriage took place in 1995 and divorced in 2002, the couple has one child together, a boy named Buck Thomas. In addition to her child, Brandi Ann Brown which she had in her teens, Roseanne Barr has 5 children.

Relationship With Donald Trump

This comedienne has been linked to the U.S. president,  as they share some of the same views on some governmental policies, like the anti-Islamic and pro-Israeli agenda pushed by Trump. On Twitter, while Barr tweeted a tirade of offensive tweets while Trump retweeted some of these tweets. They have been linked since 2013, when expressed the desire to have Barr as a contestant on his show and when he received her support during the 2016 elections.
