Who is Bill Engvall? – Bio

William Ray Engvall popularly known as Bill Engvall was born on July 27, 1957, in Galveston, Texas. He passed through Richardson High School in Richardson Texas where he graduated from before attending Southwestern University, Georgetown Texas although he left college before he could graduate. He was a member of Xi Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order.

Bill was set on acquiring a bachelor’s degree and setting his sail to becoming a teacher while in college but fate had a different plan for him. On leaving college, he worked different jobs including being a tour guide at Inner Space Caverns and a disk jockey in a nightclub in Dallas, Texas. His going into stand up comedy was consequent upon his working as a DJ. He performed at amateur and open mic nights around Dallas and it didn’t take long before he discovered that comedy was actually his forte. He would move to southern California in 1990 to dedicate his time fully to comedy and later to Los Angeles to venture into acting.

In no time, he rose to prominence courtesy of his appearances in a number of successful shows and series. He co-hosted the cable show A pair of Jokers with comedienne Rosie O’Donnell and was cast on an episode of the sitcom, The Golden Girls as Matthew Devereaux, the son of Blanche Devereaux. Bill also hosted A&E Network’s An Evening at The Improv and stand-up routines on The Tonight Show and the Late Show with David Letterman.

He got his career breakthrough in 1992 when he won the American Comedy Awards’ Best Male Standup. Bill Engvall starred as a regular in the ABC sitcom Delta for the one season it aired. In 1996, he was cast in the NBC version of The Jeff Foxworthy Show with his best friend and fellow comic .

Since his career took off, he has released ten studio comedy albums and was signed by Warner Bros. records in 1996. The albums include Here’s Your Sign which was certified platinum and peaked at #5 on the Billboard Country album chart, Dorkfish, Here’s Your Christmas Album, Now That’s Awesome, Cheap Drunk: An Autobiography, Here’s Your Sign Reloaded, A Decade of Laughs, 15° Off CoolAged and Confused.

Bill Engvall, in addition to his comedic resume, launched the highly successful Blue Collar Comedy Tour with Jeff Foxworthy in 2000. The comedy ensemble also includes and Ron White. He landed a hosting gig on the game show Lingo in June 2011 marking a new beginning in his career.

Bill contested on season 17 of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars paired with Emma Slater, they finished fourth. He has also starred in the TBS sitcom The Bill Engvall Show alongside  who was launched into her award-winning career following the exposure. He also executive produced the show, lent his voice to the animated comedy series Bounty Hunters, as well as starred in many solo specials for Comedy Central.

Additionally, as an author, he has released a number of books including Just a Guy: Notes from a Blue Collar Life (2007) which he co-authored with Alan Eisenstock.

Bill is one of the four children born to William R. Engvall and Jeanne Shinkle McCormick. The others are his sisters; Judy, Jenny and Janet Engvall McTigue. Janet was a former Executive Director of Georgetown Area United Way as well as a practicing attorney in Texas until her death in November 2007.

Bill is the husband of Gail whom he married on December 18, 1982. Gail was born on August 6, 1960. The two are parents to a daughter, Emily, born in 1986 and a son, Travis, born on June 25, 1991. While Emily graduated from the University of Puget Sound, her brother rounded off his studies in Northern Arizona University.

Bill bases a great deal of his comedy on his life as a family man often mentioning his family during his routines. His subjects include culture of the Southern United States, everyday life, marriage, parenting, as well as self-deprecation.

His daughter Emily got married to William Holden on August 31, 2014.
