Jeon So-mi is a Korean Canadian singer who is known for the work she does in the K-Pop scene. As K-Pop has become more popular and is now recognized in international circles as an important part of South Korea’s entertainment industry, there has been an increase in the number of people who are willing to display their talents and although not all attempts at becoming a star have been successful, people like Jeon So-mi are making a mark with the careers in entertainment that they have.

In the K-Pop industry there is a higher number of music groups than there is of people who have solo careers, Jeon So-mi is one of those few people who have solo careers, however before she began her solo career, Jeon So-mi was part of the group IOI, this is a common trend with those who have solo careers as they usually start off as being part of groups.
This artiste was born on the 9th of March, 2001 as Ennik Somi Douma. She was born in Ontario, Canada to Jeon Sun-hee and Matthew Douma, her father is Canadian while her mother is Korean. As a result of this, in the Korean tradition of children bearing their mother’s surname, her surname is Jeon while she also bears her father’s surname Douma, leaving just Somi which is the stage name she goes by. Being mixed race was difficult for Jeon during her childhood, as she got bullied for it.
Learning Taekwondo was something she was interested in as a child, she is only a third-degree belt holder but her skill is so impressive that in the second season of the variety sports’ program, Let’s Go Dream Team she represented her school, Midong Elementary School in the Taekwondo category. Jeon So-mi and Park Joon-hyung- another celebrity were the two people who participated in this category for their school. When she was done at Midong, So-Mi went on to Cheongdam Middle school and in 2019 was reportedly studying Practical Music and Vocal at Hanlim Multi Art School.
Jeon So-mi’s foray into entertainment started in 2014 after she had few appearances on television she then decided to audition for JYP Entertainment as she wanted to work in their agency. She sang Lonely by 2NE1 and bagged a position in the agency. Jeon So-mi’s first public appearance as a trainee of JYP Entertainment was with her appearing in the music video of the boy band Got7’s song, Stop Stop It.
By 2015, the following year after she joined the JYPE, she participated in the competition Sixteen. The competition was for a place on the agency’s next girl group; she got to the final round but did not make it through. Jeon So-mi continued training with the agency and in the next year, she participated in another competition to join another girl group, in this competition she had the highest number of votes and secured first place on IOI. The group disbanded a year after in 2017 and in 2018 she also terminated her contract with JYPE. Her single Birthday was the song she debuted her solo career with, as a member of the now-defunct , the group released two albums, six singles, and 2 EPs.

Jeon So-mi now leads a solo career as a musician and is currently signed to The Black Label which is a subsidiary of YG Entertainment. Working as an entertainer has opened her up to brands that need to leverage on her fame and push their products, as a result of this she has worked with Reebok, Fanta, and Nuovo. The Korean based cosmetic brand, Shiseido and The Wetskills Foundation have selected her as their ambassador.
