Who is Susan Calman?

Susan Calman is a Scottish comic star, television show host and writer, best known for her appearance on BBC Radio show including Keep Calman Carry On, I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue and The News Quiz. In addition, Susan has hosted several game shows including the CBBC children’s show Top Class, The Lie and Armchair Detectives, among others. She also garnered fame through her appearance on the 2017 edition of Strictly Come Dancing where she finishing at the 7th position.

The comic actress was born as Susan Grace Calman on the 6th day of November 1974 in Glasgow, Scotland. She was born to British parents Kenneth Calman and his wife Anne Wilkie. Her father was the former chief medical officer for Scotland and presently the chancellor at the University of Glasgow. She spent her childhood days in Glasgow where she was raised along with her two other siblings.

Susan attended the High School of Glasgow and after which she went on to obtain a law degree from the University of Glasgow. While she was there, she won the Judge Brennan Scholarship which gave her an opportunity to work with the criminals on death row in North Carolina for three months. After her graduation, she went on to practice corporate law for seven years before ditching her law career to venture into comedy. She worked as an expert in freedom of information and data protection at a UK law firm called Dundas & Wilson.

Comedy Career

Susan Calman made her first stint as a comedian when she participated in the BBC New Comedy competition in 2005. There she put up a brilliant performance, thus reaching the semi-finals. The following year, she was a finalist in the Funny Women Comedy competition. She got her breakthrough while appearing in the Channel 4’s show Blowout which won a BAFTA award in 2007. For her witty and excellent performances, Susan was honored as the Best New Scottish Comedian at the Real Radio Variety Awards held in 2009.

The comedian starred in comedy-drama series including Fresh Meat, Susan Calman is Convicted, and Dead Boss. Her show Susan Calman is Convicted fetched her an award for Best Radio Comedy in 2013. She became a regular panelist in the CBBC show called The Dog Ate My Homework in 2014. In the same year, she also appeared on other shows such as Don’t Drop the Baton and Sexy Beasts. Since 2017, she has been anchoring the daytime quiz show The Boss on BBC One as well as Armchair Detectives and many more.

Additionally, Susan received the TV Star of the Year Award in December 2017 following her wonderful performances. She also appeared on the BBC dancing competition, Strictly Come Dancing in 2017. Along with her partner Kevin Clifton, Susan finished at the seventh position.

Susan Calman’s has been among the popular celebrities whose sexuality has been a thing of public scrutiny. Interestingly, the comedian came out openly as gay when she was nineteen years old. At the time, the LGBT community has not been fully accepted in Scotland; hence, making life so difficult for Susan. Later on, she started a relationship with a lesbian partner named Lee Cormack. Although she was in the relationship, Susan never brought their relationship to the limelight.

They further took a bold step in 2012 when they both had a civil partnership ceremony. Four years later, they tied the knot in a same-sex marriage held at the Fruitmarket Glasgow in 2016. There are no much details about her partner Lee Cormack; the much we could gather is that Cormack is a lawyer and is working as a legal manager at Glasgow City Council. The pair has been living happily ever after and they don’t have plans of having kids yet.
