Soon he took up performing as a stand-up comedian, favoring monologues over traditional joke telling.

He found favor amongst audiences across the world because he seemed like a smart, insecure, and fretful character, which most people could relate to. Comedy Central ranked him at No. 4 on the list of 100 greatest stand-up comedians in 2004. Another survey in England named him the third greatest comedian ever.

Allen went on to write and direct his own films, beginning with slapstick comedies and then moving on to more dramatic works influenced by 1970s European art cinema. As the years trudged on, he alternated between the two, often starring in his productions. Allen has over 50 films to his credits, and some of the most notable are Manhattan, Annie Hall, Crimes and Misdemeanours, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Hannah and Her Sisters, Match Point, and Stardust Memories.
