A journey that started with Professor X and the gang nearly two decades ago may be ending on a rather horrific note with The New Mutants. The film should have hit the big screen since Friday the 13th, April 2018 but for one reason or the other, its release has been postponed to Friday, 3rd of April 2020. As for what to expect in the film, think of it as a Stephen King and John Hughes merger, rather than just the usual epic action that the X-men film series has been known for. A horror movie packed with mutant superpowers is certainly something to look forward to, and this upcoming 13th installment promises just that in the trailer that was released in 2017. In this article, we take you through the X-Men: The New Mutants cast you should expect to see in the movie and the potential mutant power of each character. Read on…

X-Men: The New Mutants Cast & Characters With Their Potential Powers

To be clear, the film’s director Josh Boone (to whom this movie is a passion project of sorts) says they are trying to make a full-fledged horror film set in the X-men universe. The mutants in this film will be too busy trying to save themselves instead of the world.

Imagine being a teenage mutant and you have to discover your abilities in a secret facility where you are being held against your will. This is the premise of The New Mutants, the only difference is that there are five of them, and they are not only trying to save themselves but also to escape their past transgressions.

X-Men: The New Mutants cast includes Charlie Heaton, Anya Taylor-Joy, Henry Zaga, Maisie Williams, Blu Hunt as the five diverse mutants of interest as well as the Queen of the South herself, Alice Braga.

Charlie Heaton plays Sam Guthrie (Cannonball)

The British Stranger Things actor will be portraying an American Mutant whose real name is Sam Guthrie with the other name Cannonball. Cannonball’s special ability is flight, hence the name. He can propel himself into the air and surround himself with a force field impossible to penetrate while doing so.

Blu Hunt plays Danielle Moonstar (Mirage)

The second X-Men: New Mutants cast is American actress, Blu Hunt who will be portraying Danielle Moonstar, a mutant of Native American descent. Her other name is Mirage and she has the ability to draw from a person’s deepest desires and fears and create illusions with them, like a mirage. Although Mirage is a lot more endowed power-wise in the comics, it appears the upcoming film only focuses on her ability to create illusions.

Maisie Williams plays Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane)

This Game of Thrones sweetheart is coming back again as a wolf no less. Williams will be portraying Rahne Sinclair, a religious Scottish mutant also known as Wolfsbane who has the ability to turn into a wolf. However, Wolfsbane’s belief makes it tough for her to come to terms with her shape-shifting abilities.

Henry Zaga plays Roberto da Costa (Sunspot)

Teen Wolf’s Josh Diaz, Brazilian actor Henry Zaga will be portraying Brazilian mutant Roberto da Costa, also known as Sunspot. As his name implies, Sunspot’s specialty is the sun. He can directly absorb and manipulate energy from the sun.

Anya Taylor-Joy plays Illyana Rasputin (Magik)

Anya Taylor-Joy of The Witch fame is the last but certainly not the least of X-Men: New Mutants cast. The American-born English actress will be portraying a Russian mutant, Illyana Rasputin also known as Magik because of her sorcery powers. Magik’s special ability is teleportation, she is able to travel to different places using Teleportation discs.

Rasputin is the only one of the five new mutants with a direct link to the X-men. She is the younger sister of the virtuous Colossus. Colbi Gannett will be playing a younger version of her.

Alicia Braga plays Cecilia Reyes

The Brazilian will star in The New Mutants as Dr. Cecilia Reyes, a medical doctor with the special ability to create and surround herself with a protective biological field. She also doubles as a mentor to the group.

Happy Anderson plays Reverend Craig Sinclair

Mindhunter actor, Happy Anderson, will be out hunting again, only this time he will be hunting mutants. He portrays the leader of a Christian Fundamentalist group called The Purifiers. The group believes mutants are of the devil and so their mission is to eradicate all mutants. The Reverend is also Wolfsbane’s father, albeit an abusive one.
