Popular for his heckler interaction, dark humour, and deadpan delivery, Jimmy Carr is an English actor, presenter, writer, and stand-up comedian who went into comedy fully in 2000.

After establishing himself as a stand-up comedian, he began appearing on a number of TV shows aired on Channel 4, including The Big Fat Quiz of the Year, which he hosted. He also hosted Distraction, 8 Out of 10 Cats, the panel show, and Your Face or Mine?Carr has also authored a book titled The Naked Jape: Uncovering the Hidden World of Jokes on the history and theory of joke-telling.

Brief Bio

Jimmy Carr was born in Isleworth, London on the 15th of September 1972. He is the second of the three sons born to his parents – Nora Mary and Patrick James Carr. His father was an accountant, who later became a treasurer for a computer company named Unisys.

His parents are from Ireland relocated to Britain from the Irish city of Limerick. They got married in 1970 and separated in 1994 after twenty-four years, however, they were never divorced, they remained separated until Nora’s death in 2001. The Carr’s family didn’t cut all ties with their Irish roots, they visited Kilkee and Limerick frequently, in fact, Jimmy holds British and Irish citizenship.

Carr attended Farnham Common School and Burnham Grammar School, both in South Buckinghamshire, where he spent most of his early years. He began his high school at Burnham Grammar School and finished at Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe. After high school, he headed to the Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, from where he graduated in 1994, earning his first degree in social science and political science.

Career

After graduation, he worked in the marketing department at Shell but later left since he wasn’t getting any fulfilment there. That same month, he performed his first paid stand-up gig and this was the beginning of his rise to stardom.

From that moment, Carr has continued to perform stand-up tours continuously throughout the year, taking only about five weeks off. In 2003, he hosted his Edinburgh Festival show titled Charm Offensive and by the second day of the festival, he had already sold out an entire month’s tickets, he also received 5-star reviews from four major newspapers.

The following year (2004), he performed at shows held in several places across the country including Vicar Street, Kilkenny Cat Laughs, Leicester’s Comedy Festival, Glasgow Festival, and many others.

In 2006, he began the tour Gag Reflex, which earned him the year’s British Comedy Award for “Best Live Stand up”. So far in his comedy career, he has released seven comedy DVDs, the latest one Jimmy Carr: Laughing and Joking was released in November 2013.

Jimmy Carr is also well known for his outstanding hosting skills. He has hosted a couple of TV shows, especially ones that have been aired on Channel 4, including 100 Worst Pop Records100 Worst BritonsYour Face or Mine?, 100 People Who Look Most Like Jimmy Carr (a spoof), 100 Scary Moments,  100 Greatest Cartoon Characters, among others.

He also hosted the U.S version of the Distraction, which aired on Comedy Central, between 2004 and 2006 when he was nominated for the Rose d’Or award for “Best Game Show Host”

Carr has also made guest appearances on several shows including Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Late Night with , The Last Leg, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and many more.

Jimmy Carr has also been a celebrity contestant on the following shows: Deal or No Deal, he won £750 for Helen & Douglas House, Tipping Point, he won £7,000 for Blue Cross, Benchmark, here, he won £1,000 for AIDS Foundation, he also appeared on Catchphrase and on The Chase, where he won £1,000 for Variety Club.

The multi-talented/versatile comedian is a regular guest and interviewer on BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends and on BBC Radio Scotland’s The Fred MacAulay Show. In 2005, Carr hosted a comedy review of 2004 on BBC Radio 2, titled It’s Been a Terrible Year. Up until July 2006, Jimmy Carr hosted a Sunday morning radio show on Xfm alongside comedian Iain Morris.

The comedian is a recipient of several prestigious awards which includes: Time Out Award for Best Stand Up (2002), Royal Television Society Award for Best On-Screen Newcomer (2003), LAFTA Awards for Best Stand Up Comedian, LAFTA Awards for Funniest Man, British Comedy Awards for Best Live Stand Up Comedian, Loaded Lafta Award for Best Stand Up, etc.
