It was as Annette Jones that the comedian whom we all know as Leslie Jones was born on September 7, 1967, in Memphis, Tennessee. Growing up in a military family, Leslie kept moving around with her family, but it was in Los Angeles that the family finally settled.

The greatest insecurity of the comedian, while she was growing up, was her looks, but as a result of her height, her father made her start playing basketball, something that she would come to appreciate.

Thanks to basketball, she was given a scholarship to the Chapman University in Orange, California. Nonetheless, she would later move to the Colorado State University after her coach moved there and asked her to follow him.

You would easily think that it was basketball that she was cut out for, but her funny side was not hidden from her friends. This pushed one of them to secretly get her into a comedy contest which she would go on to win and then be titled the “Funniest Person on Campus.”

Before then, she was a fan of people like Richard Pryor and Redd Foxx but didn’t see herself as someone who could do comedy even though she knew she could make people laugh. As soon as she won the contest, she walked out of her basketball dreams and that of becoming a lawyer and went back to Los Angeles where she moved in with her boyfriend and started pursuing comedy and then becoming the next .

It was not going to be smooth for her as having got a very bad reception, she was forced to stop comedy for more than a couple of years before bracing up to come back again, but this time around, she was in to stay. Although she acted in some TV shows playing uncredited roles, her first recognized role was in Girlfriends (2004). She has thus far, gone on to appear in many other TV shows including Saturday Night Live which she joined in 2014.

Her first movie role was in For Love of the Game (1999) followed by National Security (2003). Leslie Jones has also acted in many other movies including Ghostbusters and Masterminds both in 2016.

A winner of the WFCC Award, the Ghostbusters actress has also been nominated for a good number of other awards including the Primetime Emmy Awards, Black Reel Awards, and Kids’ Choice Awards, USA.
