Born on the 6th of July, 1979 in Queens, New York, Kasher as a one-year-old had to relocate to Oakland, California with his mother and sibling. His full name at birth was Mark Moshe Kasher.
Growing up was difficult as Kasher and his family had to live off food stamps and disability assistance.
He was a son of deaf parents who had met at the World Games for the Deaf in 1967.
Kasher had a difficult childhood, in his autobiography Kasher in the Rye: The True Tale of a White Boy from Oakland Who Became a Drug Addict, Criminal, Mental Patient, and Then Turned 16, he talks about the challenges he encountered with admissions into mental institutions from age 4, issues with his academics and battles with drugs from 12 to 16.
Kasher’s parents split when he was 9 and by the time he got clean at 17, he became a sign language interpreter.
After earning his G.E.D at 16, he attended community college in the Bay Area where he studied Theater. He did later transfer to the University of California, Santa Barbara graduating with a degree in Religious Studies and minoring in Jewish.
Kasher was brought up Jewish, his brother is a rabbi and before venturing into comedy, he had considered teaching Jewish history as a college professor.
In 2001, he linked up with an old friend Chelsea Peretti and after a while, Peretti took Kasher to his first performance, an open mic at the Luggage Store Gallery in San Francisco.
The early 2000s saw Kasher perform in the Bay Area mostly. He had regular appearances at Cobbs and Punch Line comedy clubs. He moved to Los Angeles in 2008. A year later, Kasher was named “Best of Fest” at the Aspen Rooftop Comedy Festival for that year.
He soon followed that up with an appearance on Comedy Central and an invitation to the Just For Laughs comedy festival.
A comedy album was released by Kasher in April of 2009 and went on to do well, making the top 20 comedy albums on iTunes. His stand-up career has consistently been on the rise since.
Aside from stand-up, Kasher is a published writer with works like his autobiography and his long-form monologue “Look Before You Leap” written in college both already in print.
Kasher has also gone on to incorporate new spheres into his career as he has also ventured somewhat into acting.
